Composition is the main distinction between a physical change as well as a chemical change. When there is an alter in the composition of the substance, it is classified as a chemical change. In other words, it is no longer the same substance because another substance is added in. A chemical reaction could be change in temperature, change in color, noticeable smell (odor), the formation of a precipitate, or the formation of bubbles. A physical changes occurs in a physical change, such as texture, color, temperature, shape, or the state (gas, liquid, solid). Most importantly, in a physical change there is only a difference in the display of the sample of matter, and not a change in composition. This means that the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) plus the acetic acid (vinegar) yields carbon dioxide plus water plus sodium plus acetate. This chemical reaction process happens in two steps. First of all, there is a double displacement where there is a reaction between the acetic acid in vinegar and the sodium bicarbonate. As a result, it forms sodium acetate and carbonic acid (NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2CO3). The unstable carbonic acid goes through the decomposition reaction which produces carbon dioxide gas (H2CO3 → H2O + CO2). There is a chemical change of the formation of the bubbles because the carbon dioxide escapes the solution and forms the bubbles when vinegar and baking soda react. It is important to note that only acetic acids react with baking soda to form the fizzy or bubbles in the chemical reaction. The base reacts with the acetic acid which breaks apart and form multiple substances. At the end of this chemical reaction, the result would not be a base nor an acid, and new substances are created. Carbon dioxide is a a gas that is created in this process. CO2 will leave the liquid mixture, expand throughout the bottle and the balloon will be inflated. This reaction is resulted into a chemical reaction because of various reasons. The vinegar has a really strong smell, but after mixing it with baking soda, the smells is not at strong.
