Chemical Laws Lab

614 Words3 Pages
Purpose The purpose of this lab is to attempt to verify two of the three important chemical laws, The law of conservation of mass, The law of definite proportions, and the law of multiple proportions. The laws are verified through observation of the reaction between iodine and zinc. This lab also helps to hone laboratory and massing skills. this lab includes both qualitative observation and quantitative gravimetric data. Background Questions 1. For each of the three important chemical laws, briefly explain each law in your own words. The Law of Conservation of Mass The law of conservation of mass states that the mass of a substance never changes, even if it is decomposed,or goes through a chemical reaction. The product of the reaction…show more content…
Provide an example for each of the three chemical laws. The Law of Conservation of Mass An example of the law of conservation of matter is salt dissolving in water. the resulting solution will have the same mass as the salt and water[4] The Law of Definite Proportions An example of the law of definite proportions, is the ratio of oxygen and hydrogen in water. the ratio remains the same regardless of the quantity of water.[5] Law of Multiple Proportions An example of the law of multiple proportions, is hydrogen and oxygen combining to form co2 or co but not co1.9.[6] 3. Describe the type of laboratory data one would need to show support each law. The Law of Conservation of Mass the law of conservation of mass could be supported by the mass, of the reactants and of the products of a reaction. gravimetric data would he most appropriate to support this
