Approximately as many as 8 million people in Mexico, Central America, and South America have Chagas disease, some whom don’t even know they are infected. This disease also known as T. cruzi infection is named after a Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas, who was the one who discovered the disease in 1909. According to the CDC, Chagas disease is one of the most neglected parasitic infection. The causative agent for the disease is the parasite known as Trypanosoma cruzi. Chagas disease has two different phases known as an acute and a chronic phase. The acute phase occurs immediately after acquiring the infection. This phase may last a few weeks or even few months.
