Intellectual Disability It may also call as mental retardation, which is characterized by below-average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skills needed for everyday living. It has many levels, from mild to intense disability. It is divided into two areas, namely, intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors. Intellectual functioning is also called as IQ and being defined as the person's ability to absorb information, make decisions, create reasons and solve problems. While on the other hand, Adaptive behaviors are described as the skills needed in day-to-day life such as communicating effectively, interact with others and take care of one. Intellectual disability may result if a baby is deprived of oxygen during childbirth or born extremely premature. • Illness or injury. Infections like meningitis, whooping cough, or the measles can lead to intellectual disability. Severe head injury, near-drowning, extreme malnutrition, exposure to toxic substances such as lead, and severe neglect or abuse can also cause it. • None of the above.
