“Characters of the Novel” In this book, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the characters are very interesting. The best characters in this book are Bruno, Shmuel, and mother. “The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one” (New International Version Bible, 1 Corinthians. 2.15) Bruno was one of the main characters, throughout the book there are many things learned about him. Bruno was lonely after he moved from Berlin. He had no one to play with, the only person he had was his “hopeless case” sister, Gretel. But she never wanted to play with him. He didn’t wanted to move out of Berlin at first, but after he was at “out with” for some time, he didn't want to move from there. Lastly he was too young to know what was really going on there. He didn’t understand why his friend was on the other side, and why everyone told him the jews were bad. In his eyes Shmuel, his friend, was just like his old friends from Berlin.” I don’t like it here; he said for the hundredth time” (Boyne 26). Bruno was young and he didn’t understand what was going on which made him innocent.…show more content…
Shmuel was a jew so he was in the concentration camp. He was not what people said jews were like during this time. He was very forgiving. He forgave Bruno after he told Kotler , the soldier, that he was not friends with him and he had never seen him in his life. When Bruno said that to Kotler Shmuel later got beaten for “stealing” food. Shmuel was innocent, he talked about his life before being in the concentration camps, it shows how much his life is just the same as everyone else and how he did nothing wrong. “ All I know is this” began Shmuel,”Before we came here I lived with my mother and father and brother Josef in a small flat above the store where papa makes his watches” (Boyne 126).
