The American Psychological Association define the term personality as ones “individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving” (APA, 2017). Over time, personality is thought to have been a stable trait however as research suggests, although people may act in different ways in accordance with the situation they find themselves in, their individual personality traits can have a major effect on their behaviour (Zuckerman, 2005). The concept of life satisfaction is an individual’s assessment of their life in terms of the feelings and attitudes they hold whether those feelings are negative or positive (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin 1985). The Big Five personality traits openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism were examined. The research hypothesis that was presented in the study are, firstly, there will be a positive correlation between Emotional Stability and Life Satisfaction, this was proven as a positive significant relationship. The second hypothesis suggested there will be a positive correlation between Life Satisfaction and Extraversion, this was supported by a statistically positive significant relationship. The third hypothesis, proposed there will be a positive correlation between Life Satisfaction and Intellect/Imagination was supported by a statistically positive significant relationship. The fourth hypothesis, there will be a positive correlation between Life Satisfaction and Conscientiousness is supported, however, the relationship is not significant. The population sample was self-selected with respondents being a group of family and/or friends of students in the PY300 module in DCU, so hence, it did not represent a full random spread of the population. With the survey being done online, there was a potential bias to a younger generation who had access to technology and skills to do same. Some participants started the survey and did not finish it. This could be related to technology issues or could be related to a lack of know-how among the older generation. However, on the flip side, there could have been a lot fewer participants if this was done as a standard pen and paper exercise as there would not have been access to a large number of recipients in such short period of time. Recommendations for Future Research This study delivered empirical evidence that one’s personality traits have a positive effect on Life Satisfaction. If the research was to be repeated, more effort to recruit the male population to participate in the study should be undertaken as this would represent a greater sample and reduce gender
