Chapter 5 2. What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and what are its strengths and weaknesses? Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a hundred questions personality test given to employers to express their characteristics and personality traits. One of the strengths of MBTI is that you can generally get an idea of what someone’s characteristics are like in the work force. A weakness of the exam is that many employees are not completely honest while taking the exam and if they are hired, their employers soon realizes that their personality is different from what the test results said. The big five traits predict how far up the ladder in an organization someone will go. The more traits they withhold the more they are likely to be successful within a career. If an employee is an extraverted person is will be easier to talk to customers and they will be more outgoing to make a connection that could help them get to the next step in their career path. If someone is emotional stable, people will be able to trust them as their leader. People want to follow someone who doesn’t get nervous when they have to lead a big project, but takes it as a challenge to grow not only themselves but their co-workers. Another big trait would be agreeableness and that relates to job satisfaction. Someone may be able to complete a project well, but if they don’t like the work environment then they won’t complete the project to the best of their ability. They include power distance, individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term versus short-term orientation. Power distance is how a country decides to use their power in the rankings of people and how they distribute it across their country. Individualism is when citizens act on their own versus collectivism when a culture acts as a community. Masculinity is when someone acts with power and control and the community treats men with more value than they do women versus femininity where men and women are both treated equally. When a culture feels intimidated by a decision made within their country this is called uncertainty avoidance. Long-term orientation is the value of the future and short-term orientation is what is coming in the near future and the benefits that are coming to the culture and
