History of Baseball A famous quote once said by renowned baseball player Rogers Hornsby, “People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. Ill tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring”. This quote shows how much someone can love the game of baseball and want to play it. He is one of the many that love to play the great sport of baseball. Numerous people were influenced by him and other greats who played baseball. Countless things have contributed to where the game is at today. From teams, facts, originators, inventors, and coaches there are endless things that have impacted the game. Before baseball was invented there were games played before it had even been thought of. When you grow up in a baseball family you learn many things from mentors, coaches, role models, and siblings. All of the greats that played the game were once introduced to the game by someone in their life. Some examples of similar games are stickball, town ball, and cricket. The games of town ball and stick ball were played by many kids around the world on sandlots. All of these games were played around the world before baseball was invented. These games paved the way for baseball and how the game would be played in the future. If these games were never played by kids in the U.S. and around the world baseball would never have been invented. Imagine never seeing a different pitch in your life and then getting thrown a weird slower pitch curving down. “The first curveball was thrown in 1867 by Candy Cummings” (Brainy Quotes). That first curveball changed how pitchers and batters alike thought of the game. The Uncle Charlie made a huge impact on the sport and continues to today and will for years to come. Another monumental event was when the first african-american, Jackie Robinson, played his first major league baseball game. The game was played in 1947 and opened the doors for many different races to play the great sport of baseball forever. Without these events we would still be where we were at back then being segregated. Jackie Robinson was a true pioneer for everyone to see that he could be treated as an equal. “The way I figured it, I was even with baseball and baseball with me. The game had much for me, and I had done much for it” (Brainy Quotes). There are many important events in baseball history and these were just 2 examples that would change the game
