Throughout the narrative, the characters are experiencing many challenges in their lives in light of the fact that they are a low-income family. The story begins with Pelayo gets rid of the crabs that have washed shoreward into his property. He encounters an old man with enormous wings in the mud. This very old man is the stranger; the person who comes into their circle, from the outside, he is an outsider.
