9/11 Reflection

“In remembrance of the September 11th terrorist attacks that happened 13 years ago today, we will be watching a video of the events that took place”, my history teacher said this out loud as she searched YouTube. When she pressed play, I became aware of my wildly beating heart and it wasn't long before I could hear it in my ears. I dropped my head on the desk and covered my ears as a child would do in the middle of a war zone. No matter how hard I squeezed, I could still hear the video playing in the background. Tears stung my eyes and made their way down my face in an endless pour. While it was my friend that led me out of the classroom, I felt like I had been rescued by superman. There was a recurring trend in the way I answered my questions. While all of my answers reflected that I am relatively happy with my circumstances, the numbers increased in each category from the past to the future. I think this reflects my strong belief in the idea that there is always light at the end of every tunnel. Regardless of the situation, things get better and I can be a better person than I was yesterday. The most surprising thing about the ICOPPE assessment was that it revealed my lowest scores to be in interpersonal and psychological well-being. I have learned from our class discussions that two categories are closely related. Good psychological wellness means that I experience more positive emotions than negative ones and I am able to deal with stressors in my life. My actions and moods are a result of how I manage to deal with situations. Sometimes I find myself struggling to cope with my emotions and it takes a toll on my psychological state. For the most part I am able to maintain a good mood and, as a result, I have numerous meaningful exchanges with others. The positive relationships in my life are the foundation to my interpersonal well- being. These relationships have been my support system by providing encouragement and guidance. The “BET I CAN” method we were introduced to in our class lecture has provided me with steps to take in order to be better in coping with stress. The first two parts, behavior and emotion, have helped me start to overcome my situation. I have been setting goals for myself in increments of the next week, next 3 months, and next year. It helps me to see what I am aiming for and understand that they are obtainable. My stress often stems from thinking that I have more bad experiences than good, so I write down all my positive experiences. The positive almost always outweighs the bad and this reduces my stress tremendously. Throughout the rest of the course, I am confident that I will be able to learn more strategies to improve my overall
