Voter Identification When is voting ever a burden? It is said that voter identification places an undue burden on certain segments of the U.S. population, undermining our democracy and the principle of “one man… one vote.” Why is it a burden? It is not that hard to obtain identification. There are many people who would be happy to help someone get it. If one really cares about getting to vote there is nothing that could stop them from getting their identification and placing their one vote. Having one’s say in the country and how it is run is not a burden to anyone. Identification can include a driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, photo I.D., or non-photo I.D. Most people have their own vehicle, and if they have a vehicle they should have a driver’s license which would count as voter identification. If they do not have a vehicle, there are lots of other options. Depending on where you live, there are buses, taxis, trains, bikes, or even horses. There is also carpooling. One can catch a ride from a family member, friend, or neighbor. If one had a strong enough will one could even walk to a DMV office! Transportation is not an issue. Transportation is available to all citizens. Cost is not an issue. There are multiple programs offered to help with if not to completely cover the cost of getting identification. Lastly, determination IS an issue. If one does not have the will to vote let alone get identification, then they will not do it. Voter I.D. laws do not keep any citizens from being able to vote. They are keeping the polls fair and by preventing fraud. True citizens will do anything to better their country. In a sense, voter I.D. laws create show whom the true citizens
