College athletes spend a lot of their time practicing, studying film, and working out. This can be like a full time job, so this leaves only enough time to be able to do school work. This leaves no time for jobs so these athletes cannot pay for some of the things they want and need. These students are put into the colleges with their biggest priority being the sport that they are in. These students are not really aloud to choose the major they would really like if they cannot fit their classes with their practice schedule (Cooper). These students can also be taking easier classes or even missing classes just so they can go work out or study for their next game. Many good college athletes can get fully paid scholarships or most of it paid for them. “They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses” (Mitchell). If colleges didn’t offer the athletes scholarships and just paid the students then there would be many downfalls to it. The students would have taxes being taken highly out of there checks and with what would be left would be barely enough to equal for their scholarships. So instead of paying these athletes colleges are giving them an education without putting them in debt (Martinez). If universities started paying athletes than the smaller schools would start to lose some of its sports, because the schools would only be able to keep their most money making sports. “The money to pay athletes must come from somewhere, which might put the least-popular college programs at risk of being cut” (Martinez).
