Journal 2 Due date: Tuesday October 6th I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 42. This book is about a girl named Scout who is just starting school, and is living with her brother Jem, her father Atticus, and her maid Calpurnia. I predict that the kids will not meet Boo. A couple reasons why they will not meet Boo is that he was arrested for being in a gang. “They did little, but enough to be discussed by the town and publicly warned from three pulpits.” (Lee page #12) Also, Boo had stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors. Miss Caroline made her first mistake when she called Burris out in front of the entire class for having “Cooties” otherwise known as lice. She told him to go home and wash his hair when, he may not have been able to. As the teacher picked her victims one by one, she also chose Walter. Now, everyone in the class knew Walter could not pay her back like she had suggested he do if he had taken the quarter she offered to him. She went on embarrassing him as the whole class tried to tell her his situation. Her last victim however, was nonetheless Scout. Scout had, tried explaining to Miss Caroline that, her father Atticus had already taught her how to read on her own and of course, she would not allow that so she instructed her to have her father stop educating her. She of course did this in front of the class as well. The way’s Miss Caroline should have responded would be that instead of embarrassing Burris in front of the class, she could have talked to him, one on one and voice her concerns privately. Another way that she could have been more empathetic and taken a walk in their shoes is, when Walter said he could not take her money she maybe could have asked him privately why he could not do so and save him the embarrassment. Lastly, she could have been more sympathetic to Scout. Scout only, knew how to read and that apparently was a
