They are dirty and rude. On the first day of school, Burris came to school with cooties. “The cooties host showed not the faintest interest in the furor he had wrought. He searched the scalp above his forehead, located his guest and pinched it between his thumb and forefinger (Lee 34).” Miss Caroline told Burris to go home and take a bath. Miss Carline was worried that the rest of the kids would get the cooties. Buris was told to go home and take a bath. Miss Caroline told him to go and wash his hair with lye soap. When he was done, he was to treat his scalp with kerosene. Scout said he was the filthiest human she had ever seen. She states, “His neck was dark gray, the backs of his hands were rusty, and his fingertips were black deep into the quick” (Lee 35). Buris is a very rude person. He only goes to school on the first day. One of the elderly members of the class told Miss Caroline, “ They come first day every year and then leave. The truant lady gets ’em here ’cause she threatens ’em with the sheriff, but she’s give up tryin’ to hold ’em…” (Lee 36). At school, Buris decides to talk back to Miss Caroline. When Miss Caroline tells Buris to go home he says, “You try and make me, missus” (Lee 36). Buris was arguing with Miss Caroline.
