Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 and died on October 18, 1931. He was the 10th most prolific inventor in the world by number of patent families held. Edison was an inventor who was considered one of America's leading businessmen. An inventor of major technology, including the first commercially useable beaming light bulbs. Today he is credited for helping to build Americas economy during the nations accessible early years. Some inventions included the telegraph, the universal stock thicker, the phonograph, the first commercially practical radiant electric light bulb. Edison's father, Samuel was an exiled political activist from Canada, while Thomas's mother, Nancy was an accomplished school teacher and a major influence in Thomas's early life. Thomas had difficult hearing because ear infections. According to his teachers they found him very difficult at school. At the age of 11 his mother took him out of school and taught him at home. At the age of 12 he convinced his parents to let him sell newspapers to passengers along the Grand Trunk Railroad line. He began publishing his own small newspaper, called the Grand Trunk Herald.
