In “The White Tiger” by Aravind Adiga, one way Balram tries to reach his full potential is by altering his image so he appears similar to the successful people around him. Balram is the main character in “The White Tiger” and the novel is made up of emails to the Premier of China in which Balram details his bloody rise to success. Throughout this journey, Balram continuously changes how he presents himself to the world in order to get ahead. This is shown when Mr. Ashok, Balram’s employer, and his wife, Pinky Madam, make fun of Balram’s pronunciation: “‘Going to the mall, sir?’ I asked, the moment they were quiet. Pinky Madam let out a short, high laugh…‘It’s not maal, it’s a mall,” [Mr. Ashok] said. ‘Say it again.’ I kept saying ‘maal,’ and they kept asking me to repeat it, and then giggled hysterically each time I did so…I did not get out of the car: it helped me concentrate my mind better if I was here.…show more content…
Moool. No, that wasn’t it. Mowll. Malla” (Adiga 124). This is saying that Balram does not know how to correctly pronounce mall, which amuses Mr. Ashok and Pinky Madam. This means that Mr. Ashok and Pinky Madam think they are smarter than Balram. They see Balram as uneducated and naive to city life, so belittling him makes Mr. Ashok and Pinky Madam feel as though they are better and smarter than Balram. However, Balram realizes that his employers see him as lesser and tries to properly pronounce “mall” so he will sound more intelligent. This matters because Balram is trying to model his diction after Mr. Ashok and Pinky Madam because he knows they are successful people. Balram knows that he will not become successful if people don’t take what he says seriously. Another example of Balram modelling himself after his superiors is when he buys new clothes: “Mr. Ashok was wearing a T-shirt. It was like no T-shirt I would ever choose to buy at a store.
