The Negative Effects Of Ocean Acidification

730 Words3 Pages
Ocean acidification is a term which is used to explain some changes which occurs in the ocean. These significant changes occur when the carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by ocean and reacts with seawater which in return produces acids. This research is about how OA affects environmental conditions of marine ecosystem and global elemental cycles. Different research approaches are discussed to know the effects of OA to our environment, ecosystem and marine organisms. Objectives: • The main objective of this research is to know about the ocean acidification and its impacts on ecosystem and marine organism • To understand different solutions about ocean acidification • Control carbon dioxide concentration as OA is because of higher carbon dioxide…show more content…
Because of human activities the concentration of carbon dioxide is increasing and indirectly these activities affects the oceans as ocean absorbed CO2 and reacts with the minerals of sea and produces acids. As the rate of CO2 increases, the more will be the ocean acidification and it will give negative effects to our environment, marine organisms and ecosystem. According to the recent report the seawater acidity is increased by 26% and if we don’t do something for this problem in the near future, the OA will be increased to 110-150%. Many experiments have been done to know the effects of OA on organism and it shows that it specifically affects the calcifying organism’s growth rate, nutrient rate and survival. OA also cause other environmental perturbations such as warming, eutrophication, and DE oxygenation. Some aspects of OA we understand but there are some that we don’t. For example how OA affects the environmental perturbations. In early 2000, we did not give much importance to ocean acidification as we name it another problem of CO2 or global warming. The acknowledgement of OA is done by many meetings and workshop. Because of these meetings we are now very well familiar with this term but we should have more research approaches so we can understand the impacts of OA. There are many research approaches to study about ocean acidification including observations of natural environments experiencing different seawater CO2…show more content…
In the observation of natural system, we can understand OA by natural controls and variability of seawater CO2 chemistry, biogeochemical cycling, and environmental and ecological controls on organismal success. To know the future condition about OA we should understand the current conditions of environmental conditions. If we recognize present conditions of the CO2 in environment we can estimate the level of ocean acidification in the future. Another approach is by experiments and manipulations, by polluting seawater by CO2 for experiment purposes in the lab we can understand the impacts of ocean acidification on marine organisms. We can know how OA affects the rate of growth and nutrient cycle of organisms. By the manipulation of seawater in the lab we can know its characteristics and the chemistry of ocean and how CO2 manipulates it and cause negative effects to ecosystem and organism. We can do experiments in smaller or large scale. Geological record is another approach to know about OA. By going through the earth’s history we can know about environmental perturbations which happened in the world because of ocean acidification. Sediments sample can help us in gaining the data and other information of geological record of OA. The effects of OA on marine communities and ecosystems vary among geographic regions
