In The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck readers experience through the lives of Wang Lung as well as his family how love and devotion dictates our lives and those around us. Wang Lung’s love for his children throughout the novel is incessant. He wants his children to have a superior life than he could and decides to educate his son, ‘‘‘I will take my elder son from the fields and he shall go to a school…’’’ (162). Similarly, Wang Lung presents unconditional love for his daughter when he learns of her mental disabilities and cares for her regardless.
