INTRODUCTION Six sigma is a quality-control program it emphasized cycle-time improvement and reducing manufacturing defects. At many organizations it simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects in any process from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service. The philosophy behind Six Sigma is that if you measure how many defects are in a process, you can figure out how to systematically eliminate them and get as close to perfection as possible. In order for a company to achieve Six Sigma, it cannot produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities, where an opportunity is defined as a chance for non-conformance.…show more content…
Quality function deployment (QFD), are relatively new tools in six sigma, the fishbone diagram, date back 50 years or more. Six Sigma is so powerful because of the combination of Customer focus, data driven decision making, business results focus and process understanding, these elements with a rigorous, disciplined approach and well-publicized, proven business successes. Six sigma started as production improvement and quality tool from the year: 1798: Eli Whitney, Mass Production and Interchangeable Parts, Objective methods of measuring and assuring dimensional consistency by using go gages and no go gages. 1913: Henry Ford and the Moving Assembly Line, increasing production volumes 1924: Walter Shewhart, data collection, analysis and statistical quality control. 1945: The Japanese Quality Movement Begins, plan-do-check-act (PDCA) and plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycle. 1973: The Japanese Make Their Move, defect elimination and cycle time reduction. 1980: If Japan Can, Why Can’t We? United States, the quality trilogy (planning, improvement and…show more content…
customer focused quality that lead to the current Six Sigma methodology. 1988: Beyond Motorola, . IBM and other early users clearly identified the need to ensure the project was properly scoped, resourced and defined by adding a “D” for define to the methodology (DMAIC). 1960-1995: Other Initiatives, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler- statistical process control, supplier management, failure mode and effects analysis and business planning. Reduced cycle times and inventory levels were key elements of JIT manufacturing. Six Sigma has evolved into two key methodologies DMAIC: It is a data-driven quality strategy for improving processes used for improving an existing business process. Define > Measure > Analyze > Improve >Control DMADV: It is a data-driven quality strategy for designing products & processes used to create new product designs or process designs in such a way that it results in a more predictable, mature and defect free performance. Define > Measure > Analyze > Design >Verify Apart for the above mentioned there is one more called DFSS - Design for Six Sigma. DFSS is a data-driven quality strategy for designing or redesigning a product or service from the ground
