The word self-centered can be twisted into many different ways or forms, but what exactly does it mean? Self-centered can be defined as concerned solely with one's own desires, needs, or interests. In the short story “A good Man Is Hard to Find” by Mary Flannery O’ Connor, the story begins with a family planning a trip to Florida however the grandmother wants to go to Tennessee. She pleads her case by mentioning there’s a criminal named, “ The Misfit”on the loose, and he’s headed to Florida, but no one takes her seriously. When the family goes down the wrong road, they suddenly become involved in a terrible accident, and the family members get separated. The grandmother goes on and on about going to Tennessee. She even tells a story about a plantation with a special house she had once visited. The reader can detect danger or a possible lesson going to be given to the grandmother. The father and young boy are the first to be led into the woods then all of a sudden there was the sound of two gunshots, second to depart was the mother and young girl, thus leaving only the grandmother for last. O’Connor tells how the grandmother tries to reason by reaching out to the misfit stating “why you’re one of my babies, you’re one of my own children”(267).
