Building Self Esteem “Some things may be equally essential but nothing is more important than a healthy sense of self-esteem and loving yourself (Edberg, 2014). Is this true and how can building ones self-esteem larger partner in treating psychological conditions in today’s society? There has been much research in this area over the years, and in today’s therapies of psychological disorders, such as addictions and addictive behavior, self-esteem building seems to be changing how people see themselves and how they cope with psychological disorders. By identifying their strengths, addicts begin to use their strengths in dealing with the day to day tasks that may have caused them to question their competence. As accomplishments are celebrated, self-esteem raises. Once their value is confirmed by others and themselves, those with addictive behavior, begin to experience increased self-worth and personal pride, increasing their self-esteem measurements. This happens sometime in a group setting, where others in the group encourage the client, and provide positive feedback. With newly identified strengths, new skills, and an increased sense of belonging, the client can begin the cycle of increased self-esteem. Most addicts will benefit from a combination of the above therapies. Low self-esteem has been linked to negative behaviors such as aggression, violence, and addictive behaviors. But long-term studies reported reversal or reduction of these tendencies when programs and techniques were initiated to increase individual’s self-esteem. High self-esteem has been linked with higher achievement, increased productivity, and an overall general happiness and increase reporting of a successful living.
