The American Revolutionary War brought on many changes in America and resulted in freedom for the people. We thought about the many effects the revolution impacted our nation but rarely thought about the lives of the children and families involved during that time. Our nation was affected greatly economically and socially. Two of the major short-term impacts during the American Revolutionary War for children and families were the living conditions and the widowed mothers. Also, two of the major long-term impacts on lives of children and families were the changes in education and in motherly parenting. Many of the children played roles in the Revolution War and were many much affected. The living conditions weren’t very pleasant due to an exposure of dead bodies around the children’s households. Diseases also affected the living conditions for the children because their where people constantly dying and they were exposed to it. In contrast to now, doctors didn’t have a vast amount of supply to aid many families and children. Children and the families accompanied the soldiers to the campaigns which also put the lives in danger. There was an increase of widowed mothers and single-home parents. Not all children attended schools, the majority of the children that were wealthy finished school and began to go to college. While the rest of the poor children helped their widowed mothers with household duties and tried to discipline children to become “self-governing adults”. Economically families and children lived in crowded areas, poor sanitation and the drinking water they had was polluted.
