Rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep, REMS) is a phase, which is distinctive to mammals sleeping pattern. Within this stage the muscles of the human body are most relaxed. It is also in this crucial stage of sleep when dreams are more likely to be vivid. It is also during this phase memories are consolidated making them more easily recalled. It is within the nondeclarative memories where we receive emotional responses from simple classical conditioning. Deprivation in the REM phase of sleep effects certain mechanisms of emotional memory; reactivation, consolidation, and encoding. The process of consolidation makes a memory less susceptible to interference and is done in three levels; stabilization, enhancement, and integration. This process
