Both Great Awakenings have in common their need and urging for an individual salvation with the Lord. Rather than being centered on one group of people, both awakenings reached out to all classes. According to Cynthia A. Rice “The Great Awakening was a spiritual renewal movement that was targeted at the common man and woman, rich and the poor, black and white, male and female, all were welcome….” (104) The message was clear to stir hearts to repent and follow the Lord.
