Sleep. Everyone does it, but not everyone knows the sequence of events the mind goes through to get there. There are many questions that arise when one discusses sleep and often times it is about dreaming. In this reading we will examine the stages of sleep and the phenomenon of dreaming. According to Gerrig (2013) one sleep cycle can be broken down into two main parts called non-REM (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. There are four stages of non-REM sleep and REM sleep is a stage within itself. A sleep cycle is approximately 100-minutes long and a sleeper goes through a cycle between four to six times during their sleep.
