Prescription drug abuse is becoming the newest trend in the war on drugs. Due to the increase availability of prescription opioids over the last decades, people from all lifestyles are battling addictions to these pills that are legal and distributed by medical professionals. Every day, 46 people in the U.S. die from overdosing on prescription drugs (Nordrum, 2015). Thus in an effort to address this issue, societal level interventions such as creating a prescription drug monitoring database in which doctors and pharmacists can use to identify “doctor shoppers” i.e. people who go from office to office complaining of pain and then sell their medication has been undertaken in nearly every state.
