Everybody has the opportunity to be a hero, but does everybody take it? A hero is someone who is respectful and willing to put their safety in harms way in order to keep others safe. Ponyboy is a hero. Johnny is also a hero. Dally is not a hero. What a wonderful world we would live in if everyone jumped at those opportunities. Ponyboy is a hero. When the time comes he always pulls through by not being afraid. “ ‘I’ll get them, don’t worry!’ I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. ‘I’ll get them. You kids stay out!’ I jerked loose and ran on.” (p 91) Pony knew that he had started the fire in the church and only had one thing on his mind, getting the children to safety. He is always thinking of others. “ ‘Aw, cut it out!’ Johnny broke in. ‘Dally was bothering them and when he left they wanted us to sit with them to protect them. Against wisecracking greasers like you, probably.’” (p 28) Cherry and Marcia were feeling uncomfortable and although Johnny was the kid of the gang, he felt the need to stand up for the girls against Two-bit. Like Ponyboy, Johnny is considerate about others futures. “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…”(p 148)On his death bed, he wanted his last words to be encouraging for Pony. Unlike the two other greasers Dally was not a hero. Instead of being polite, he treats other people like they are animals. When Johnny, Ponyboy, and him were at the drive in movie he was introduced to the book as someone who does not care about other people’s well being, “He put his feet up on the redheads chair, winked at me and beat his own record for saying something dirty.”(p 87) Nobody would want to be treated like this and it is common sense to know thatss.
