Police brutality has been around for nearly 150 years. It is defined as an officer or officers who uses force when it is not called for, or who uses more force than is necessary. Police officers are legally permitted to use force to protect the public and confront potentially violent individuals. They can legally use physical, and even deadly force under certain circumstances. Police brutality also happens during arrest, in the courts, during searches, and in death. The fine line is, when is it considered excessive or uncalled for? Any situation can escalate very quickly in any matter. Excessive force is when an officer uses unreasonable force in making a lawful arrest. A police officer has the right to use reasonable force that is necessary under the circumstances to make a lawful arrest. Police officers face danger while carrying out their responsibilities on a daily basis. While dealing with a dangerous or unpredictable situation, officers usually have very little time to evaluate the circumstances and determine the proper response. I get that the police are here to protect others but they need to protect themselves first in order to protect you. These accusations are an ongoing routine from the people in our modern day society that never seems to be satisfied. People seem to think law enforcement is so easy. In actuality, criminals do not want to be arrested, they do not put their hands up, and resist while being handcuffed. These criminals will run, fight, and kill, just to avoid apprehension. Some instigate and antagonize the police officer, telling them to kill them, proclaiming they'll never give up. Most have nothing to lose and prison and not new to them. Today, when a police officer is perceived as making a poor decision, they stand alone, stripped of all pride and respect. When a courageous deed is accomplished and they risk their life, they are respected and people stand behind them patting them on their back. Not all police officers are good, some are bad and they get caught just like criminals do. They are not perfect and are just like you and me. They go to work every day and do their best to protect the community and people while putting their lives at risk. So instead of pointing your finger on how wrong the police are, point your finger at others and say, “Why did you do that in the first place?” You don’t want to do the time don’t do the crime.
