The Effects of Light on the Rate of Photosynthesis Tong Wu October 10, 2014 Lab section 82036: Mondays at 12:00 PM - 2:45 PM Performed and written by: Nayobe Bivins Stephanie Wigmore Abstract The objective of this experiment was to determine the relationship between light and the rate of the photosynthesis of the Elodea plant; that is, to describe the effects of a light source on photosynthesis. To test the effects of light on photosynthesis in this experiment, the Elodea plant was placed under the presence and absence of a light source. Furthermore, the balanced chemical equation of photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2OC6H12O6 + 6O2 depicts that carbon dioxide and water react together to form glucose and oxygen molecules. Therefore, the production of oxygen gas measured in the volume of the solution was used to measure the rate of photosynthesis. Introduction: Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use energy from sunlight to produce high energy compounds. This lab investigation was performed to investigate the effect that light intensity has on the rate of photosynthesis. This investigation is important because it will demonstrate the effect that light has on photosynthesis, and conclude whether or not photosynthesis could occur without a light source and how important and critical that light…show more content…
The group started by preparing the experiment setup. Four test tubes that were lined up on the test tube rack were labeled as sodium bicarbonate with light, sodium bicarbonate without light, phenol red with light, and phenol red without light. For convenience purposes, the group divided the experiment into two parts: sodium bicarbonate and phenol red where sodium bicarbonate was first
