Kelley Small Maddie, Gillian, Ally 21 October 2015 Period 5 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Abstract: In this lab, we tested the rate of production and consumption of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen from spinach leaves in different amounts of light. We tested it one time using a completely dark space and one time using a space with lots of light. In order to calculate the data, we used LoggerPro and BioChambers to measure the gases in fifteen minute intervals. There are four bar graphs, measuring the data at one individual table, the class data, and the average of the class. There is also two graphs taken form LoggerPro, showing the precise amount of CO2 and O2 produced. There was one outlier within the class. This is possibly from light…show more content…
The products of one process is the reactants of the other process. “Cellular respiration is the process that releases energy from food in presence of oxygen” (Chapter 9 PowerPoint). “Photosynthesis is the process where plants convert sunlight into chemical energy stored in the bonds of carbohydrates” (Chapter 7 PowerPoint). Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast, an organelle in plant cells that contains the molecule chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs the energy of sunlight. That light energy is converted to chemical energy through the steps of photosynthesis” (http://biologycorner.com/ worksheets/photosynthesis_rate.html). “Plant biomass is the food and fuel for all animals. Plants are the primary producers. These amazing organisms are capable of capturing the energy of sunlight and fixing it in the form of potential chemical energy in organic compounds” (saps.org.uk). Photosynthesis and cellular respiration cannot properly function without the other. Photosynthesis takes in carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose and oxygen. Cellular respiration takes in the glucose and oxygen that plants produce. “Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are important parts of the carbon cycle. The carbon cycle is the pathways through which carbon is recycled in the biosphere”…show more content…
If we allow no light to touch the spinach leaves, then there will be more carbon dioxide produced. Whereas, if we allow light to touch the leaves, then there will be a greater amount of oxygen. My hypothesis was right because there was more oxygen produced in the light and more carbon dioxide produced in the dark. It is very likely this lab was wrong because there was an outlier. This could be from light entering the darkened container. If I were to do this lab again, I would put the same amount of leaves in each container, clean both containers equally, and do both the light and dark experiments on the same day.
