ANALYZING AND EVALUATING HISTORICAL VIEWS OF LEADERHIP This paper describes the analysis of evaluation of the historical views of leadership that is essential to understand that the historical views of leadership is an important function of management which help to maximize effectiveness and to achieve organizational goals. Leadership style is a style of providing direction, implementing plans, motivating and persuading followers. For centuries, early analyses of leadership differentiate between leader and follower characteristic. Charisma is characterized by a special quality that enables the leader to mobilize and sustain activity within an organization through specific personal action combined with perceived persona characteristic. (Wren, 1995, p 108) Charismatic leadership affects followers’ sense of collective identity and perceived group task performance. A leader’s leadership behavior can influence followers’ reactions towards the leader, themselves and their task efforts. Although many of the traits such as self-confidence, energy, and the ability to communicate relate to all types of leadership, however, their combination is what set this type of leader apart from the other leadership style. Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill, and Bill Clinton were outstanding successful as charismatic leaders. Not all good leaders are able to project a vision, to explain to the group the purpose, meaning and significance. George H. W. Bush is by all account a decent and likable man, but he is utterly pragmatic in his thinking; before the 1992 election, he complained to this staff that he did not understand “the vision thing”. Transformational leaders transform the personal value of followers to support a vision and goals of the organization by fostering an environment where relationship can be formed and by establishing a climate of trust in which vision can be shared (Bass, 1985). One quality of a transformational leader is that followers not only follow, contribute effort and material resources needed to get the job done. Transformational and charismatic leadership theory address the leadership styles that foster change by appealing to emotional rather than material values. Transformational leadership style was a better determinant of citizenship behavior than other leadership styles. Transformational leadership can make the difference in achieving goals that transactional leadership is unable to achieve. The transformational leadership framework incorporate: influence, vision, trust, respect and credibility, risk-sharing or delegation, integrity, and modeling. Transformational leadership emphasize the importance of appreciating and value people, listening, mentoring or teaching, and empowering followers.
