Americans come in so many shapes and sizes , but then society won't accept them as “Americans”. This leads to having so many hyphenated Americans. For example Mexican-American, Asian-American, African- American, irish-American and so many more. Being American is living in huge melting pot of people striving to live the American dream, But where there can also be injustice and discrimination. Being American is having unique opportunities and the right to be free and equal. In america, people can express who they are and can strive for and achieve their dreams. For example Franklin D. Roosevelt in his speech at the 50th anniversary of the statute of liberty he says " The promise which the new world held out to those who came to it from many lands is finding fulfillment". Many foreigners come to America to fulfill their American dream too show their potential and to strive and achieve their dreams in the new land. Also in America the people get the unique and extraordinary opportunity to be part of a huge melting pot. And still to this day there is so much injustice and discrimination. In American the people have to work really hard to achieve your dream and in the journey it takes to fulfill the dream. There will be moments of discrimination and injustice, it can be because of looks, race, gender, Etc. For example Langston Hughes in his poem “Let America be America again he wrote “ I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine.I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—Hungry yet today despite the dream. Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers! I am the man who never got ahead, The poorest worker bartered through the years”.
