Sports sparks and awareness of a nation and provide occasions for public discussion that creates at least temporary unity among citizens, feelings of pride and opportunities to assert slick affirmation of national identity claim on a broader geographical scale (Topiĉ & Coakley, 2010 p. 372). Additionally, according to Jaksa (2011) sports are a powerful force for good at the national level, positively contributing to the formation of national identities (p.39). The island won its first ever gold medal in an Olympic event and its only medal in any Olympic sporting event. This medal was won by kirani James, Grenada’s 400 metres athlete. The winning of the gold medal at an Olympic game was proud moment for Grenadians. This win was celebrated by a “jump up” in Gouyave, St. John, the parish which Kirani James hailed from. On the day of the presentation of medal, almost all Grenadians, both locally and internationally, stood at attention and sang the island’s national anthem as the nation’s flag was hoisted. To this date, many people on the island still continue to feel a sense of pride and belonging toward the country because of what Kirani has done. A pool was installed in Good Hope, St. Paul’s where students from various schools around the country can go to in order to earn to swim. Furthermore, sport is now taken more seriously. As a matter of fact, there has been an improvement in the coaching of athletes throughout the island. There has been an increase in the number of athletes that represent Grenada around the world to take part in athletics competition. More emphasis is being placed on the improvement of athletics in the country not just in the 400 metres but also in swimming and other track and field event such as the
