There are many similarities and differences between the synopsis of The Matrix, the excerpt from Plato’s The Republic, “The Allegory of the Cave,” and the excerpt from Rene Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, “Meditation I of the Things of Which We May Doubt.” There are three similarities between all three readings. First, the characters are skeptical and doubtful of the reality they reside in and question if they are being manipulated by something or someone else. Second, the characters all want to abandon the reality they reside in to find what they believe to be true reality. Third, the characters are all controlled and are having their minds manipulated. Finally, Descartes is controlled by his perception of evil demons. Now I am going to compare each of Plato and Rene Descartes excerpts to The Matrix synopsis. I am going to begin by comparing the excerpt from Plato’s The Republic, “The Allegory of the Cave,” and the synopsis of The Matrix. In comparison, the characters both have been controlled and constrained from the time when they were born. The characters do not know of any other reality except the one they presently reside in. The characters from each come in contact with the one controlling them and are released from their manipulation. Even thought the characters were both constrained, they were constrained in different ways. The characters in Plato’s, “The Allegory of the Cave,” were constrained by chains since childhood.
