Running Head: Mesopotamian Life The Interesting Days of Mesopotamia Grace Holderby Lincoln Charter School October 11th Mr. Thomas Honors World History No one will ever be absolutely sure what the first civilization on Earth was. As far as the human race knows, the first civilization was Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia was brought to civilization by the Sumerian race around 5000 B.C. The Sumerians first housed an area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, as well as Persia, The Nile Valley, Indus Valley, and North India. Mesopotamia is most likely to have lasted from 5000 B.C. through 300 B.C. Many people say that there were more civilizations before Mesopotamia. Sumerians also had slavery in their society, but could earn money and to buy freedom. Men had more power in the society than women did. Women, however, had power in their families. A ruler’s wife would have had authority in the government of whatever city-state their husband ran. The rights of women, literacy importance, and the many gods were shared everywhere. Mesopotamia was a region that made various empires and civilizations, not just one. Mesopotamia is known as the cradle of civilization because of the rise of the city and the development of writing. Mesopotamians also invented wheels. Four wheeled wagons were found by Sir Leonard Woolley in Ur with leather tires. Mesopotamians domesticated animals before most other people as well, which eventually lead to agriculture and warfare. Time’s measurements were also invented by the Mesopotamian people, along with chariots, wine, beer, sailboats, irrigation, and religious rituals.
