When Murphy makes his decision about the goat herders, the reader is left thinking ‘what would I do?’ and ‘what if?’ The situations during the battles and decisions made are real. The consequences from them are final. The emotions in this book are genuine and make you feel like you know the characters. As a reader you understand completely the physical, emotional, and mental strength it takes to be a Navy SEAL. Luttrell tells the story not only as a Navy SEAL but as a human being (civilian) too. Even though these SEALs have been trained to kill they are still human beings with feelings and beliefs. Each man has someone or something that they have faith in and it is important. During different scenes in the book, things seem to miraculously happen. A gun shows up unexpectedly, enemies act as allies, and resources show up out of nowhere. One of the themes of this book is loyalty. These men have each other’s back no matter what the situation. It is a brotherhood. They are not only loyal to one another but loyal to the United States of America. Courage, strength, patriotism, and faith are other themes of this book. These men show great strength and courage in the face of death. It took courage from each one of these men to be able to stay focused and do what was right even though things were not going
