The solute is partitions between two immiscible phases. One phase usually is an organic solvent and another one phase usually is aqueous solution such as toluene used in extracting acetone from water in this experiment. The liquid solvent is added into the feed to extract solute. This experiment involves only a ternary system which is acetone-toluene-water system. The acetone-water solution is called feed (water-carrier) and the acetone is the solute which is ready to be extracted by…show more content…
Raschig rings are pieces of tube used in large numbers as random packing within extraction unit column for distillation process. They are one of the major factors in controlling the extraction mechanism. They provide a large surface area within the volume of the column for interaction between liquid, liquid-gas or gas. An increase in the number of ring provides a much larger contact area for the extraction process to be proceeded. Moreover, decreasing the size of Raschig ring enable the distillation column to be filled with more rings, thus improve separation efficiency. Apart from that, if the extraction is carry out with slightly heating, the separation will be more efficient as heating provide the molecules kinetic energy and increase the movement with each
