Aaron McMahon Joyce Mitchell English 101 27 September 2015 Justice for all Arguably one of the most influential people in the United States, John Roberts presides over a court that has the power to interpret laws for the whole of America. John Roberts, better known as Chief Justice Roberts, is the head of the United States Supreme Court. Although he is seen as conservative leaning, Chief Justice Roberts has sided with his liberal constituents when he felt it was the proper thing to do. While conservatives may view this as a betrayal, others view it as his ability to be impartial and distance his personal convictions from the issue at hand. Justice Roberts attended Harvard College, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree. Three years later he received his Juris Doctor degree. After gaining his law degree, John Roberts was hired to clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly on the court of appeals for the second circuit. Justice Roberts clerked for Judge Friendly for one year then went on to clerk for William Rehnquist. After a year clerking for Rehnquist, John worked for the Reagan administration. He was first hired as an assistant to the attorney general, which he did for another year. Roberts then spent four years as an Associate Council to Fred Fielding, the then White House Council. In 1986, Roberts left the Associate Council position and entered private practice of law. In 1989 Roberts was asked to join Bush seniors’ administration as Principal Deputy Solicitor General, he did so for four years. During this time Roberts began to become very familiar with the Supreme Court. Roberts represented the United States in the position of Principal Deputy Solicitor General. In 2005 Roberts was nominated by president Bush to fill the seat on the Supreme Court that would be open with the retiring of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Roberts’ nomination was still pending in the Senate when Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist passed away. With the news of the Chief Justices’ death Bush withdrew his nomination and changed it to the position of Chief Justice. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved his nomination on September 22, 2005. On the twenty-ninth of September of the same year, a full senate vote finalized the approval of his nomination. Roberts took his judicial oath on October 3, 2005, becoming the official Chief Justice. Chief Justice Roberts has presided over some controversial cases since he has held the position of Chief Justice. Justice Roberts has been the focus of controversy as well. In 2006 he wrote his first dissent. The case in which Roberts gave his dissenting opinion was Georgia V. Randolph. The case questioned if one person’s consent was enough for police to search a home if a co-owner of the property refused to allow a search. The court decided that it was not enough
