4. HOW PLASTICS ARE MADE? The Plastic production process begins by heating the hydrocarbons in a “cracking process”. Here, in the presence of a catalyst, large molecules are broken down into smaller ones such as ethene (C2H2), propene (C3H6), and butene (C4H8) and other hydrocarbons. The yield of ethene is controlled by cracking temperature and is more than 30% in 850°C and such products as styrene and vinyl chloride can be produced in subsequent reactions. These are then the starting materials for several other types of plastics. Therefore this process results in the conversion of natural gas or crude oil components into monomers such as ethylene, propylene, butene and styrene. These monomers are then chemically bonded into chains called polymers.…show more content…
A section of molten polymer tubing is extruded into an open mold. By means of compressed air or stream the plastic is then blown into the design of the mold. This procedure is generally utilized for the manufacture of bottles and similar products. [8] 5.APPLICATION OF PLASTICS: Plastics play an important part in our life. Plastics' versatility allow it to be used in everything from baby toys to spaceship, from soft drink bottles to the refrigerators in which they are stored. From the car you drive to work and from the television you relax yourself when you get home. Plastics help make your life less demanding and better. So how could it be that plastics have turned out to be so broadly used? How did plastics turn into the choice for such a large number of uses? The simple answer is that plastics are the material that can provide the things consumers want and need. Plastics have the unique capability to be manufactured, to meet very particular practical requirements for buyers. So maybe there's another question that's relevant: What do I want? Regardless of how you answer this question, plastics can probably satisfy your…show more content…
Plastics are also used in the outer casings of telephones, lighting fixtures, electric mixer housings, fans, radio cabinets, coffee makers, juicer machine, mobile charger, clocks and many other things. [10] (f) APPLICATION OF PLASTICS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING: Applications of plastics in civil engineering building construction are many. The main reason for this is the property of plastics which makes it durable, non-corrosive, low cost and many others. Plastics are manufactured in different forms such as moulding pipes, sheets and films. They are formed or expanded to produce materials of low density. Dissolved in solvents or dispersed as emulsions, they are used in paints, varnishes and adhesives. At present, plastics find use in buildings mainly in thin coverings, panels, sheets, foams, pipes etc. skilful use of plastics will expand the usefulness and life of conventional building materials and help them to function more efficiently and economically.
