“Who lives life as if it were a marathon, not a sprint?” (Duckworth) Grit can be defined as “courage and resolve; strength of character” (Oxford) Grit is an essential trait to have in order to be successful. It allows a person to attain their goals through perseverance and fearlessness. Developing the trait of grit can help an individual attain long term goals by ensuring they stay the course when faced with adversity, allowing them to see failure as a part of learning, and establishes a mindset that loves to learn and grow. Although some may argue that establishing the trait of grit is not necessary in order to attain long term goals, it can be very helpful in proctoring someone’s pathway to success. When faced with adversity, many people give up and do not continue pursuing their dreams. People with grit are different though. They refuse to give up, no matter what the circumstances may be. According to Carol Dweck’s research, those with a growth mindset “embrace challenges”. A person with grit will most commonly have a growth mindset, thus allowing them to pursue their dreams and goals regardless of setbacks or “bumps in the road”. They take criticism well, whereas someone with a fixed mindset will ignore all helpful feedback. “The growth mindset individual knows that he or she can change and improve, so the negative feedback is not perceived as being directly about them as a person, but rather about their current abilities” (Dweck). Criticism is similar to failure, in the way that it allows the person to grow. Without positive criticism an individual would never improve or change.
