Paper 1: Growth hormone therapy improves bone mineral density in children with cerebral palsy: a preliminary pilot study. (Ali O, Shim M, Fowler E, Greenberg M, Perkins D, Oppenheim W, Cohen P. 2007) The above study addresses the two questions that were set up to screen the best papers appropriately. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism was used to publish this paper. The chosen Journal is the world’s leading peer-reviewed journal for endocrine clinical research and clinical practice information that had an impact factor of 5.493 in 2007 when the chosen paper was published. The two questions used for screening are both addressed well by this paper. The research question of the paper selected was according to the Population, Exposure, Comparison, Outcome (PECO) method (Sackett and Straus, 2000).…show more content…
The authors’ objective was to do a pilot study to assess the effectiveness GH treatment for 18 months on spinal Bone Mineral Density, linear growth, biochemical markers, and functional measures in children with cerebral palsy. According to Bonnick and Shulman (2006) a bone mineral density change is taken as suitable intermediate end point to assess the efficacy of reduction of fracture risk. But, certain clinical trials have concluded that the decrease in the risk of fracture associated with certain therapies may happen before changes in bone mineral density become evident. According to Carmen et al. (2011) biochemical markers of bone turnover give an important contribution to better understand the physiology of the bone and the progression of bone diseases but biological markers are not the ideal diagnostic tool to diagnose osteoporosis, however, they are a tool that can be used with bone mineral density. It is interesting to note that in the paper chosen, the assessment of the efficacy of Growth Hormone therapy was done using more than one
