“Crazy isn't being broken, or swallowing a dark secret. It's you, or me, amplified” (Girl, Interrupted). Girl, Interrupted is a movie that follows the life of a teenager named Susannah in the 1960s, as she enters Claymore Mental Institution and suffers and tries to overcome a psychological disorder. Throughout her stay, she befriends other patients and essentially has a life-changing impact on all of their lives. Throughout the movie, many psychological disorders are portrayed. One of the main characters is Susannah Kaysen, who suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline Personality Disorder, henceforth referred to as BPD, is defined as “a mental health disorder that generates significant emotional instability” (Mayo Clinic Staff).…show more content…
Also, she is said to have a promiscuous sex life, which is one of the examples of impulsive behavior that is connected to BPD. Susannah’s inability to decide on a future plan and the fact may be contributed to a distorted self-image. It is easy to see that Susannah often feels worthless or flawed in the presence of her parents seemingly perfect life. Another of the main character in the movie is Lisa. Lisa shows severe sociopathic tendencies all throughout the movie. A sociopath will experience a lack of empathy towards other. They could also be said to have qualities such as superficial charm, callousness and authoritativeness. They are also known to be manipulative and cunning. Although you never see anyone from Lisa’s past, anyone she gets emotionally close to is often traumatically hurt both mentally and physically. The room that Susannah now occupies used to be Lisa’s best friend who was only referenced throughout the movie after being informed that she killed herself after Lisa ran away from the institution. Susannah’s disorder causes stress to her family, however this is more for their personal images then anything else. Given what little is known about these characters, it is plausible that these people would react this
