Over the last century man has been able to perfect the process of mass food production. From meat and dairy products up to fruits and vegetables, everything inside the supermarket is now being mass produced. No topic in the food industry goes untouched and shortcuts taken goes uncovered in the documentary, “Food Inc.”, by Robert Kenner. The secrets we have feared but have never known are told and shown to us in this documentary. Kenner, examines the corporate effect on the food industry, and discusses the meat packing industry and its effects on worker, and the corporations controlling small farmers and workers. Corporate effects on the food industry as seen in Food Inc. immediately opens with the scene of a typical America supermarket. What is noticeable about most of the products in the grocery store is the packaging of the products. Cows are fed with corn despite the fact that this is not their natural food. This is done by the corporations because of the cheap cost of corn and at the same time it speeds up their growth. Alternately, chickens are raised in cramped chicken houses where they are given growth hormones so that they will develop faster and be ready for production. These chickens are similarly cramped by the thousands where they never see nor feel the sunlight. Another important part is the illegal practices of these large food companies when it comes to labor. Illegal Mexican immigrants are employed as workers for the primary reason that their labor cost is cheap and that the company does not have to spend money on benefits.
