In the short story “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” O’Connor uses literary devices to reveal that, while pride is an important trait, in the eyes of fear it is washed away. An example of this is shown in the section of the story that “the grandmother had found that she had lost her voice.” This specific quote represents the symbol of lost motivation/symbol of lost pride. The grandmother no longer is concerned with her gentility, but has now completely lost her voice and stumbles to speak to the misfit. The grandmother also reveals her mind set that, “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady" This presages that the grandmother’s selfishness and imperfect character traits will come into play later in the story, and eventually bring her to her demise, foreshadowed by the mention of death in the quote. The grandmothers selfishness also comes into play when she was under the dashboard “Hoping she was injured” so that Bailey wouldn’t be as angry. She isn’t even concerned about the mothers broken shoulder, or if the children were harmed. This also is seen as a metaphor that “Bailey’s wrath” isn’t what she needs to fear.…show more content…
