Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899. He was born in Cicero, Illinois. His parents were Clarence and Grace Hemingway, and they raised their son mostly Chicago, but the family also spent a great deal of time in northern Michigan, where they had a cabin. In high school, he worked on his school newspaper, Trapeze and Tabula, writing mostly about sports. He went to work for the Kansas City Star after he graduated. There he gained experience that would later influence his distinct style. Ernest went to high school at Oak Park and River Forest High School from 1913 to 1917. He was an ambulance driver in the Italian Army. He was awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery for his services. During the war he sustained injuries that landed him in a hospital in Milan. He was only 18 years old when he first saw the brutalities of war. At the hospital in Milan he met a nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. He asked her to marry him and she accepted his proposal of marriage. She then left him for another man. This devastated Hemingway but provided inspiration for his writing. Still treating his injury and recovering from the war at the young age of 20, he returned to the United States taking a job at the Toronto Star. He met a woman named Hadley Richardson in Chicago. They soon married and moved to Paris. Hemingway kept his job with the Toronto Star as a foreign correspondent. Ernest Hemingway was given 6 awards in his life. Only four of them were for his writing. The other two were given for his war services. He was awarded Silver Medal of Military Valor in the Italian Armed Forces, and Bronze Star in the United States Armed Forces. The four literary awards he was given were the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea, American Academy of Arts and Letters Award of Merit, Nobel Prize for Literature , and Top Reporter of the Last Hundred Years, Kansas City
