Global Politics: Report on Engagement Activity- I have participated in an Engagement Activity in which I have interviewed two very respectable social workers Mr. Salam Khan and Mrs. Madhu Jain who belong to the organizations Bal Sahyog and Lions Club respectively. I took these interviews to get two very different perspectives on the effectiveness of NGO’s in the field of women empowerment as both social workers that I interviewed were from opposite sexes which helped me understand how a man would likely tackle the predominant problem of women empowerment and how a woman feels about this ever growing problem. My research not only helped me develop an understanding of the different complicacies that are created when numerous organizations involve themselves to help women without following the appropriate legal procedure but also enabled me to empathize on the problems women face. I wanted to gain further insight into a topic as sensitive as this as I believe understanding this concept theoretically in class would not have been enough. Thanks to my Engagement Activity I was able to understand the topic of feminism much more clearly. But they are highly ineffective in most cases as parents want marry their children of at a very young age to avoid having to pay huge sums of money in the form of dowry ; this gives rise to the second problem which leads to a low rate of women empowerment in the future. When women are married off at young ages their husbands believe that they have no need to work, the husband considers himself as the moral authority and controls the woman’s life in each and every way possible and discourages his wife to work. Women are also discouraged to work as they are scared they may be harassed at work. They are often exploited as they are considered the weaker sex. Mr. Salam khan a social worker that I interviewed believes that to empower women we must first change the mentality in their households; another problem that he helped me realise is that if a woman is empowered within her own family he family finds it harder to marry her off
