Imagine living in a country with no government; rules are nonexistent to the point where one can murder and live life like nothing happened. A good example of this is seen in Lord of the Flies when a group of young schoolboys become stranded on an island and try to create a government of their own, but come short of basic guidelines a good government should consist of. An efficient government is essential to keep the system balanced; obtain justice and keep peace. In order for a government to be effective, there are some crucial components it must possess. John Locke believed that natural rights to liberty were important because humans have a voice and it should be heard in government. He thought that man is to be free from any superior power on Earth, not to be tied down by any laws. His theories help people realize their own power and influence the government's decision (DCT). Without being able to express themselves in government, the boys fail to keep their natural rights in check. A failure to incorporate this idea is shown when the Jack’s group tie up the twins, Sam and Eric, because Jack demands them to. During this time in the book, Ralph goes over to Jack with Piggy and the twins, to discuss a solution for stealing Piggy’s specs. Having liberty means having freedom within society, and when the twins become tied up under the force of Jack’s painted boy’s, they lose this element instantly. Jack is overpowered, and this is seen when he yells at his painted group “I said ‘grab them’!” Jack’s boy’s remain hesitant at first, but soon begin to feel the power in their own hands. When Sam and Eric protest “out of the heart of civilization” the reader can see that they have no control over the current situation. Having liberty snatched away from them, Jack’s group abducts full charge, and ultimately can do whatever they like to the twins. When the painted group feels the “otherness of Samneric” this shows how they feel the power that the twins do not have. This situation soon leads Jack having a lot of power over Ralph. After brutally killing Piggy, Jack soon begins a manhunt to find and kill Ralph, totally forgetting their objective of being
