Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and John Grisham's A Time to Kill are similar, yet different in many ways. These ways include things such as the main characters, the trials and accusations, and the time period. Both novels are very similar, but they are also nearly opposites. The first way that TKAM and ATTK are similar yet different is the two main characters of the stories. Atticus Finch, TKAM, is seen by others as being an older, wiser version of Jake Briggance, ATTK. Atticus is a lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama, while Jake is a lawyer in Mississippi. Both men work equally for quality no matter what the race of their client is. Secondly, a way that TKAM AND ATTK are similar yet different was the actual trials. Carl Lee Hailey, ATTK, was put on trial for murdering two men who brutally raped his daughter. Tom Robinson, TKAM, was put on trial for an accusation of him raping a young white woman. Both trials ended with the same results, the black man takes the blame for everything. TKAM takes place in the 1930's while ATTK takes place in the 1990's. This actually plays a large part to the story of ATTK as during the late 1900's a group known as the KKK began to arise. The KKK made several impacts to Jake's case as this was a huge spike in history for the Klan. Jake's family was forced to move away from home shortly after the beginning of Lee's trial as the KKK began to target them specifically. Atticus on the other hand did not have to worry about such thing with his kids. The KKK made several disturbances to the trial of Lee over the time it took the get results by making attacks upon relatives and friends of Jake. Their only motive was to stall Jake's progress in the case to get Lee convicted for murder so he'll be
