The Greek Philosopher Aristotle believed that in order for someone to be moral they needed to model the behavior of moral people, and through continuing modeling people would just become virtuous out of habit. However, people can pick up good and bad habits based on the role models they have. In today’s society one of the biggest group of role models are musical artists. Some artists are considered “muses” because they offer positive societal values and are great examples. However, the “monsters” of the music world are the ones that are detrimental to society and have a negative impact. Katy Perry is one of the most famous musical artist today, and her fanbase stretches from young children to older adults. The fact that her songs encourage positive moral values is a great thing for society, and she is an excellent role model. Miley Cyrus is also a very popular musical artist and her fanbase is quite large as well. However, her despicable and revolting behavior is present in her music, and she offers nothing positive or beneficial to society. I do believe that Miley Cyrus is a terrible role model for anyone, however I don’t believe that she is trying to destroy society’s positive values. She is merely expressing her ideals and morals that civilization should not find significant or of value. Unlike “monster” songs, “muse” songs do offer something of worth and substantial to society. I believe if there were more “muse” than “monster” songs and artists then society will have better values, ideals, and strong role models in the music industry.
