Cars are designed to give you a smooth and comfortable ride. Unfortunately, they do too good of a job of this. Forty miles per hour in a car feels like nothing, yet it's fast enough to kill its occupants in an accident. With the comfortable upholstery, smooth ride, quiet engine, and pleasant background music, the driver has no awareness of the incredible violence that's just one driving mistake away. This is probably why people are able to believe the many unrealistic car misconceptions about accident survival.
